International Day for Biological Diversity

Biodiversity means a strong network, as we like wyrd to be.

International Day for Biological Diversity 2024: Be part of the Plan

May 22 is International Day for Biological Diversity and this year a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity.

Biological- or biodiversity refers to the variety of life on earth, like plants, animals and micro organisms such as bacteria and fungi. As humans we are part of the web of live in which all species of the earth work together to survive. For to long we disturb and even destroy ecosystems. Yet, I’m convinced we can change things for the better.

Most of the gardens in my neighbourhood have disappeared to make way for an outdoor room of stone where every blade of grass that dares to show itself is fought against. Every years I hear less buzzing of bumblebees and other pollinators. It saddens me and at the same time every bumblebee or butterfly I see make me smile and I let them know I’m glad to see them and assure them to be most welcome. My garden is to me a post stamp size piece of earth given in my care. Most flora in my garden is indigenous and I hope it to be a little oasis for insects. Let’s be aware biodiversity is not only essential for human health and well-being, but for all flora and fauna.

As heathens we have a goddess called Jord from whom is said she is a personification of the planet. To my opinion, a way to honour Jord is a modest life style as humans within the boundaries of the earth. We should ask ourselves every day ‘are we good ancestors’ and keep generations yet to come in mind with decisions we make. Let’s do all our bit to build back biodiversity to leave our children and grand, grand, grand children a healthy world on a thriving earth.

Maybe, if we learn the true value of bio-diversity, in its wake also the value of the wonderful and colourful diversity of our own species.
